Sounds like Optimus Prime is Porsche’s new VO guy. This is clearly the creation of some advertising Creative Director who has absolutely no idea what car lovers, or Porsche enthusiasts like.

Remember when these came out and everyone flipped out because they looked too much like Porsches (except without the cracked egg headlights)?
Every iteration of the Boxster since then has moved closer to the MR2 Spyder in looks.
That is all.

Porsche enthusiasts don’t buy Porsches from Porsche though.

Haven’t you heard? Enthusiasts don’t buy Porsche’s new; the majority at least. This will entice the badge snobs. :p

I don’t see it.

You have to target your largest customer bases, which come from the Cayenne, Macan, and Panamera, roughly in that order.

The americanness of it all deeply annoyed me. The accent and the “THIS SUMMER” vibe.

IN A WORLD, WHERE PEOPLE DRIVE MORE EXPENSIVE MIATAS....

‘We never turn back’

A marketing campaign is never designed to appeal to the people that already love the product.

“We never turn back. We blindly put the car in reverse and hope for the best."

I think no one bought them because they were more expensive than Miatas, harder to work on than Miatas, less practical than Miatas, and slower than the previous generation MR2 (no turbo).

And because Toyota built like 12 of them so dealers didn’t feel like giving them away and therefore hurt sales as well.
I love them. I prefer them to the Miata of the same vintage. They were a heck of a lot of fun to drive like a go kart.

That’s probably very true.

Having owned a similar vintage Miata, I’d love to try a MR2 to see how they compare. I just can’t see myself buying one over another Miata (or blowing the budget and buying an S2000).

It’s lighter and stiffer and the back end does weird things when you compare it directly to a Miata. I nearly bought a silver Miata SE in 2002 and drove them back to back while working at the Toyota shop.
Weird situation. I had S-plan for Mazdas, so i could get one at employee price, so it was worth shopping the two.
I actually drove the MR2 to the Mazda dealer to drive the Miata.
My life changed while I was still deciding and I kept the current ZX2 and Lightning rather than buy a new car.

Sorry, commenting on an old post.
I just made an offer on a 981 Boxster S. I’m a sucker for Porsche’s marketing. I even have to admit that I like the ad that you posted. What are your thoughts on their previous style? Cheesy...but it works better for me. Here’s an example:
